Scratching furniture is a marking function-the cat is trying to delineate their territory. The need to mark may increase during times of change or stress for the cat. This could be anything from not feeling well, to outside noises or other animals, to a change in the family routine. Examining all of these things might help identify what might be upsetting the cat. Cats and kittens often have different personalities-some are very outgoing and friendly, while others are more shy and quiet. It does help to respect their individual preferences and learn what types of interactions seem to work best for each individual cat. For some, just sitting quietly nearby might entice them to approach and climb on your lap. Often offering them a food treat or a new toy might increase the possibility that they will approach. Of course, if the other kittens are around, that might change things. Working on some one on one interactions and allowing him to approach at his own pace may help create a special bond with him.
